He started practising this sport when he was very young, prompted by his father Marco, manager of the Florentine Museums Authority and former rower, who wanted him to take up a healthy sport and, at the same time, solve a slight weight problem. After several years of activity, the results he has achieved are impressive: six medals at the Youth World Championships, two places on the podium in the World Championships and participation in the London Olympics in 2012, where he came in eleventh. He also loves many other sports and, in his free time, likes reading and visiting art exhibitions.
